iPhone on O2

So the lucky mobile phone carrier for the UK has been revealed: O2 will be providing the iPhone in an AT&T style exclusive deal.

O2 doesn’t seem to have the same “evil empire” reputation as AT&T, so the deal is unlikely to cause the same storm as before, but it is a shame to see such a nice piece of kit limited to the one carrier. No doubt it won’t be too long before users of Orange, 3, Vodafone and T-Mobile are able to get hold of an unlocked handset to play with :)

Anyhow, the O2 contract looks pretty good. Prices range from £35 per month for 200 minutes and 200 texts, to £55 pcm for 1200 minutes and 500 texts. All the O2 tariffs have unlimited use of wi-fi hotspots (the site doesn’t say which wi-fi spots these are… so it remains to be seen how useful this is), and unlimited data access.

There’s some speculation as to whether the iPhone will have 3G capability by the time it’s released here, but to be honest… who knows? Without it, the data connection will certainly feel rather slow.

More info here (O2).
