A moment of weakness
Well, after yesterday’s post saying I don’t buy games, I have to admit a moment of weakness. I went down to Game and bought Halo 3.
Straight off, I had a bit of a problem! I put the disc in, and it made a horrible grinding noise as if it were stopping spinning very suddenly. I don’t know if that’s a problem with my xbox or the disc, but it hasn’t done that before. But once the game got loaded up properly that problem seemed to go away, so we’ll just wait and see
Into the main menu… hit “start solo game”, and a loading screen comes up that looks like a schematic of the Halo. 5 minutes later, and I’m still there
So I backed out of that screen and went to the campaign menu instead, which seemed to have worked out I wanted to start a new game and it loaded fine (and very quickly). So, a few glitches, but again I’m not sure if that’s the game or my xbox.
So… gameplay… I’m playing through on Legendary, so progress is slow. But I have to say the graphics look lovely and crisp, the framerate is nice and smooth, and the pacing/storyline/guidance is spot on. The default sensitivity feels a little too quick for me, but I haven’t investigated whether I change it yet and, to be honest, I’m getting used to it. It also feels like the Master Chief can jump higher (longer hang-times) than before; can anyone confirm or deny that?
Online multiplayer is a blast – I had two slayer matches with the same randomly-assigned team. The equipment (shield bubbles, power drains and flares) are a cool addition to the game. More than once I threw a flare to her my Mancurian opponent shouting into his headset “aah, blind, blind, blind”. Very satisfying!
There’s a lot more playing to do here, and I realise this isn’t exactly what you’d call an in-depth review. But first impressions are that this is a cracking game that I’m more than glad I didn’t just rent.
